Mayrhofen is located within the heart of the Zillertal Valley, sitting at an elevation of c650m. It is a popular tourist destination in both the summer and winter. The location between the Penken and Ahorn mountains and the close proximity of the Hintertux Glacier means that it is a mecca for snow sports enthusiasts as well as providing a great base for those interested in summer pursuits such as mountain biking, hiking and paragliding.
The Mayrhofen lift system is open in both the winter and summer seasons and can transport guests onto the Ahorn Mountain via the 160 person Ahornbahn located at the top of town. The Penken Mountain is accessed via the Penkenbahn from the main street in Mayrhofen next door to the Hotel Strass. In the winter season there is also an option to use the Horbergbahn from its base in Schwendau. The neighbouring resorts such as Zell am Ziller and Kaltenbach are easily accessible by train and there is a regular bus service transporting people to the Hintertux Glacier.
The town is home to just under 4000 full time residents and is supported by a high quality infrastructure. The town centre offers a wide range of different shops from sports to fashion to jewellery and gifts. The emergency services are extremely efficient and the healthcare facilities are first rate.
Mayrhofen is served by a regular train service courtesy of the Zillertalbahn as well as having good road links and a comprehensive bus service. The nearest major city is Innsbruck which is about 60km away. The town also hosts a number of high profile annual events including Snowbombing and the Altitude comedy festival.
